How to Refer a Student

Step 1: Identify and engage

Research shows that people are more likely to get support if someone they know recommends it to them. Have a conversation with the student you're concerned about and let him/her/them know that MIU has support available.

Show them this website (pss.miu.edu) and give them this contact information: Clint Cunningham - 641-799-1252 - CCunningham@miu.edu.

Step 2: Warm transfer

You can also offer to do a "warm transfer." A warm transfer means that you are facilitating the connection between the student and PSS. This can be done in person or via email.

Step 3: What if the student denies help?

If you've talked with the student about getting help but the student has denied your attempts to do a "warm transfer" to PSS, you can complete this form to let PSS know about a student of concern. PSS will review the information and determine the appropriate next steps, which may include contacting you, the referred student, or any other individuals who may have relevant information.

We're here to help you, too!

Of course, PSS is here to support you, too. If you have someone you're concerned about and you're not sure how to help them,  feel free to reach out to PSS and we can help you in this process. We're available by email at personalsupport@miu.edu and by phone 641-732-2667.
